My financial career started in the 1980s when I studied accountancy at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, then worked as an auditor and accountant for Glaser Wassyng & Co (family firm of accountants).
I then became the financial controller in Seardel, a manufacturer listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
In a change of direction that fitted in with my love of writing and teaching about finance and stock markets, I became the Senior Editor of the Financial Mail in Johannesburg.
Wife Pam and I emigrated to New Zealand in 1988 where I became a founding partner in Investment Research Group, an investment and data research company, which also managed stock portfolios for individuals and family trusts. Investment Research Group was eventually sold to a listed company, and I remained under contract for a few years while still managing and advising on investment portfolios.
I later became Head of Research at Foundry Asset Management, a large wealth management company, but left them to set up my own investment consultancy, providing specialised investment planning and strategies, under the banner of Glaser Portfolio Indicators.
